Cal Western Circulation Managers’ Association

The initial meeting of this organization of newspaper circulators was held in September of 1919 at the Hotel Coronado in San Diego. It was called California Circulation Managers Association. Temporary Chairman, W.F.D. Brown, of the Oakland Tribune, conducted the meeting. The first order of business was the election of officers and W.J. Harrison of the Los Angeles Herald was elected president. A familiar name among the first board of directors was James McClatchy of the Sacramento Bee. At this first meeting, it was determined that subsequent meetings would be held on the third Monday of each October.

In 1971 the organization was renamed Cal Western Circulation Managers’ Association to acknowledge the long-standing members from other western states, including Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and Utah. In July 2017 CWCMA added New Mexico to our footprint.

Through the years, annual meetings were held in cities throughout California. The first out-of-state conference was held in Las Vegas in 1967. The membership meeting date was moved to April in 2002 and to June in 2013.

CWCMA currently boasts a membership over 157. An excerpt from the By-Laws states: The object of the Association shall be the mutual enlightenment of members and the furtherance of the best interests of the circulation departments of the newspapers with which they are connected.
